while using a bike trainer…?

so i’m going to get a fluid trainer to put my bike on. my plan is to use it for fitness during the winter what is the most efficient way to pedal? by that i mean with just tennis shoes, pedals with clips, without? do they make much of a difference? thoughts?

i’m a bit dubious about using SPD shoe/pedals on my MTB?

Do you use them? how do you find them if you come off your bike? would you recommend using them off road? i’ve got some spuds cos i just liked them as trainers but i don’t want to spend money on spd pedals if they’re not really for off road use. thanks

I put on a brand new pair of M540′s and a pair of Shimano shoes and fell over twice already, luckily on my lawn. Once I hit the trail in those damn things I don’t expect to come back. Does anyone have any advice? They’re already as loose as possible.
